Education, understanding and community support

Everything the MLC does flows from four aims — upholding the values of Islam, building understanding, supporting the community, and securing partnerships for the benefit of Muslim children's education.

Our aims

☪️ Uphold the values of Islam

To uphold the fundamental values of Islam according to the true teachings of the Qur'an — the final Revelation of Allah — and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final Messenger and Prophet.

💡 Promote understanding

To promote better understanding of Islam through education and training, thereby tackling misgivings and misconceptions held about the Islamic faith and Muslims.

🌱 Support the community

To improve support for the Muslim community through the provision of chaplaincy, curriculum design, training, publications and more.

🔗 Secure partnerships

To secure relationships with mosques, Muslim and non-Muslim organisations, and statutory bodies to improve education and training for Muslim children in line with their needs.

In practice

What that looks like day to day

Religious Education

Contributing to the locally Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and helping ensure Islam is represented accurately, in partnership with the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).

Lesson materials

Producing lesson fact sheets and year-group lesson plans — for example for Year 6 and Year 9 — to help teachers deliver high-quality, respectful teaching about Islam.

Chaplaincy

Supporting chaplaincy provision so that Muslim pupils and families have access to pastoral and spiritual care within educational settings.

Publications & papers

Creating leaflets, posters, papers and educational materials that promote understanding of Islam and address questions schools commonly raise.

Mosque circulation

Maintaining a circulation network and template communications that keep mosques and families informed and connected to the committee's work.

Interfaith & dialogue

Collaborating with interfaith organisations and statutory bodies to strengthen mutual understanding across communities.

Our functions

How we deliver our aims

Bring together voluntary and statutory organisations, government departments and individuals to improve provision for children's education and training.
Produce leaflets, posters, papers, educational and training material, curriculum design and chaplaincy provision.
Hold regular meetings to plan, review and act on the community's educational needs.

Working with SACRE

A voice in Religious Education

Local authorities convene an Agreed Syllabus Conference to set how RE is taught in their schools. The MLC contributes a Muslim perspective to this process through the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education, helping shape a syllabus that reflects the community it serves.
